ഒട്ടാവ: ക്യാനഡയുടെ 24ാം പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായി ബാങ്ക് ഒഫ് ക്യാനഡ മുന്‍ മേധാവി മാര്‍ക്ക് കാര്‍ണിയെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് ലിബറല്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടി പ്രസിഡന്‍റ് സച്ചിത് മെഹ്റ. ട്രൂഡോയുടെ പിന്‍ഗാമികളില്‍ മുന്‍പനായിരുന്നു കാര്‍ണി. 2008 മുതല്‍ 2013 വരെ ബാങ്ക് ഒഫ് ക്യാനഡയുടെ എട്ടാമത്തെ ഗവര്‍ണറായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. 2011 മുതല്‍ 2018വരെ ഫിനാന്‍ഷ്യല്‍ സ്റെറബിലിറ്റി ബോര്‍ഡ് ചെയര്‍മാനായും അദ്ദേഹം സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. യുഎസ് പ്രസിഡന്‍റ് ഡോണള്‍ഡ് ട്രംപിനെ നേരിടാന്‍ ഏറ്റവും അനുയോജ്യനായ വ്യക്തിയായാണ് കാര്‍ണിയെ സര്‍വേകള്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്.

നേതൃത്വ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ 131,674 വോട്ടുകളാണ് മാര്‍ക്ക് കാര്‍ണി നേടിയത്. ഇത് ഏകദേശം 85.9 ശതമാനത്തോളം വോട്ടുകള്‍ വരും. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ എതിരാളിയായ ക്രിസ്ററിയ ഫ്രീലാന്‍ഡ് 11,134 വോട്ടുകളും കരീന ഗൗള്‍ഡ് 4,785 വോട്ടുകളും ഫ്രാങ്ക് ബെയ് ലിസ് 4,038 വോട്ടുകളുമാണ് നേടിയത്.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ മകള്‍ ക്ളിയോ കാര്‍ണിയായിരുന്നു ലിബറല്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടി കണ്‍വന്‍ഷനില്‍ പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്നതിനായി വേദിയിലേയ്ക്ക് ക്ഷണിച്ചത്. 59കാരനായ കാര്‍ണിയുടെ ഭാര്യ യുകെ സ്വദേശിനിയായ ഡയാനയാണ്. നാലു പെണ്‍മക്കളാണ് ഈ ദമ്പതികള്‍ക്ക്.

ക്യാനഡ ശക്തമാണ് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്‍ണി, ട്രംപിന്‍റെ താരിഫ് ഭീഷണികള്‍ക്കെതിരെ ക്യാനഡ പോരാടുമെന്ന മുന്നറിയിപ്പും നല്‍കി.

നിലവില്‍ ക്യാനഡക്കാര്‍ ക്യാനഡയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി നിലകൊള്ളുകയാണ് വേണ്ടത് എന്നും ലിബറല്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടി ശക്തിയോടെയും ഐക്യത്തോടെയും തുടരുമെന്നും മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രം കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കാന്‍ പോരാടും എന്നും കാര്‍ണി പറഞ്ഞു. ശക്തമായ സമ്പദ് വ്യവസ്ഥ കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കാന്‍ ഉള്ള ഒരു പുതിയ പദ്ധതി തന്‍റെ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നടപ്പിലാക്കുമെന്നും കാര്‍ണി പറഞ്ഞു.
